Forward to Fundamental Series Clinics in Motion is an exciting new publishing medium within physiotherapy making use of the latest electronic technology. The ambitious plan is to develop a comprehensive series of DVD-videos and on ine workbooks in each clinical discipline and for physiotherapists at different levels of expertise. This is the first in the planned series of publications and covers manual therapy of the neuromusculoskeletal system. It is primarily designed for pre-registration physiotherapy students, but will also be useful for continuing professional development of junior physiotherapists and physiotherapists returning to work who wish to update their knowledge in this area.

The authors provide a logical step-by-step approach to the physical tests that might be carried out for each region of the body. Excellent photography and clear verbal descriptions provide clear guidance on how the physical tests are performed. Examination is followed by a variety of treatment techniques for each region and again these are clearly demonstrated and explained. There is some clinical reasoning introduced in the form of precised case studies.

The main subjective and physical findings of a patient are presented by the clinician; this is followed by a demonstration of a treatment technique and the rationale for its use is given by the treating clinician. Deciding on a treatment technique based on the examination findings, is a particular challenge for novice physiotherapists and so this section is likely to be particularly helpful for students.

There are, in addition, some helpful top tips and x rays for each region. The content has been developed in consultation with a number of physiotherapy educators around the world to ensure its usefulness to this user-group. I would expect this product to be well received at an international level, as it will be useful to both pre-registration students and to physiotherapy educators. It is designed to complement the students existing learning experience and so will sit alongside class teaching and clinical education.

The focus is on practical hands-on skills for the physical examination and for treatment techniques; it does not attempt to cover the subjective examination or clinical reasoning to much depth so students will need to look elsewhere for this. This is a thoroughly professional product with excellent photography, clear explanations and very able clinicians. The presenters, Helen French, Karen McCreesh, Jeremy Walsh, Ulrik McCarthy-Persson, Louise Kedroff and Miriam Williams are experienced neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapists providing a wealth of knowledge in this field.

The online workbook should further enlighten the student in the process of examination, assessment and treatment of patients with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction. This medium has a number of major advantages to the usual textbook presentation of examination and treatment skills and these will quickly become apparent on viewing the material. Students are able to see the physical test or treatment technique being carried out in real time and with concurrent explanation of what is being demonstrated. More complex techniques are also demonstrated on skeletons, showing where the hands are being placed and how the force is being applied.

The use of DVD-videos is exploited well by provding not just one way of carrying out a technique, but alternative methods. This will help facilitate understanding of the principles involved in applying a technique, as well as enabling the student to choose what suits them best. This is a unique and exciting new product that has the potential to greatly enhance the experience of students trying to learn hands-on practical skills in the examination and treatment of patients with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction.

We accept the following payment methods:

You have the right to cancel the contract and return the goods within seven (7) working days of receipt with prior agreement in writing. It is the customers’ responsibility to return the goods at their expense. The goods must be returned in their original packaging in a condition that they can be sold as new. You must ensure that the goods are packaged adequately to protect against damage. If you fail to take reasonable care of the goods before they are returned to us, and this results in damage or deterioration, we will charge you for the reduction in value. This does not affect your statutory rights with regard to faulty products.

We must be advised in writing (this includes email) within seven days of any loss, damage or shortage of goods for a claim to be considered. Note that the original shipping fees (including Vat) will not be refunded in the case of returned goods that are not the result of a product fault.
