NMS or EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation)
Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical muscle stimulation is the electrical stimulation of nerves and muscles to create an involuntary muscle contraction. NMS can be used for treating such conditions as stroke, spinal injuries, broken limbs and as a complimentary way to perform muscular training.
Treatment using NMS or EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) create involuntary muscle contractions thus minimising the degeneration changes in muscles that usually occur following immobilisation or partial denervation.
Indications for Neuromuscular Stimulation
Neuromuscular Stimulation is indicated for use in conditions that may result in:
* disuse atrophy (tissue wasting)
* restricted range of motion such as sprains
* joint and ligament repair or reconstruction
* knee cartilage injury (chrondomalacia patella)
* stroke and spinal damage.
NMS is also indicated for:
* the re-education of partial nerve damaged muscle groups,
* for relaxation of spastic muscles,
* post-operative care to improve blood flow in selected muscles,
* the maintenance of range of motion
* a complimentary way to perform muscular training
What conditions can benefited by using NMS?

1. CONTRAINDICATION - TENS/NMS UNITS SHOULD NOT BE USED BY PERSONS WITH HEART PACEMAKERS OR SERIOUS HEART RHYTHM PROBLEMS. People with heart disease or epilepsy should be evaluated by a doctor first before using a unit.
2. The person purchasing the TENS/NMS will discuss its use with their Doctor / Physiotherapist. TENS/NMS should be used under medical guidance.
3. TENS/NMS should not be used by pregnant women before 36 weeks without medical advice, or at anytime on the abdomen during pregnancy.
4. TENS/NMS should not be placed on the head, front or side of neck, over the heart or on broken and inflamed skin.
5. TENS/NMS electrodes should not be applied internally or to areas of skin where normal sensation is absent.
6. TENS /NMS equipment should not be used while bathing, showering or swimming.
7. TENS/NMS machines should not be used while operating vehicles or potentially hazardous equipment.
8. TENS/NMS equipment poses a danger to children and should be kept out of their reach.
9. Electronic monitoring equipment can be affected by TENS/NMS use.
10. NATURES GATE shall not be responsible or liable for any injury or damage sustained as a result of mis-using a machine.
11. TENS should only be used for fully diagnosed pain conditions. TENS is of no curative value; it is a symptomatic treatment, which suppresses pain symptoms.
