Lower back pain is a common symptom seen by physiotherapists, many of which put it down to postural instability and treat with advice and gentle exercise. This book provides a holistic way to approach lower back pain and explains assessments, diagnoses and treatments to correct it. Goals and objectives are set out for each chapter giving an excellent framework on which to base your learning. Throughout the book the numerous clinical challenges and case studies allow you to test your learning and reflect on how this knowledge is put into practice. I?ve found that using this pocketbook in practice has made me think more about how I approach lower back pain and opened my eyes to alternative approaches and treatments to gain the best results. This can only benefit my patients and improve my skill as a physiotherapist. 2.a great little pocketbook Reviewer: Mayuri Amin on Mar 12, 2009 I'm a big fan of pocketbooks and this one is no exception. As well as covering some basic theory around lower back pain, it then goes on to cover red and yellow flags, subjective and objective examinations and pharmacological and physiotherapy management of lower back pain. Although a pocketbook can't contain the detail of a normal sized textbook, I feel that this one covers the main concepts necessary to be able to dip into on a day to day basis. It also provides references if you wish to find more information. As a 2nd year physiotherapy student with a musculo-skeletal placement looming, I'm sure this book will be an invaluable addition to my collection. 3.An excellent little book Reviewer: Sarah Macharg on Mar 08, 2009 This recent addition to Elsevier's pocketbook range is excellent. It is aimed largely at those new to management of low back pain (LBP): students and recently qualified physiotherapists, but as it addresses all aspects of LBP management could form a useful quick reference guide for anyone working in the field in need of a little revision. Chapters address physiotherapeutic approaches, red and yellow flags, subjective and objective assessment, differential diagnosis, pain and pharmacology, physiotherapy treatments and specialist services. A series of clinical challenges and case studies are useful for developing clinical reasoning but it is a shame that they are not indexed. It is slightly irritating to have to leaf through the book to review them. However, all-in-all it is an extremely useful book at a manageable price for the junior clinician.
